Aang challenges and easily defeats her with Airbending. While at an Earthbending tournament, the group sees the blind Earthbending Master Toph. However, Fire Nation soldiers begin to attack the village, and Aang stops the raid before much damage is done, causing the village to pardon the Avatar's crime and change the "Anti-Avatar" celebration to a pro-Avatar celebration. In Aang's trial, Avatar Kyoshi appears and confesses about the crime. But Iroh is not happy with what Zuko is doing. Meanwhile, Zuko disguise as The Blue Spirit, steals food for himself and his uncle. The villagers eventually discover Aang's identity and arrest him. The villagers blame the Avatar for killing their leader Chin the Great in a past life. The group stumbles upon a town celebrating an Anti-Avatar Day. Meanwhile, Appa and Momo are captured by local Waterbenders, and are saved from being eaten near the end of the episode.
In the swamp, the gang begins to see visions: Sokka sees visions of Princess Yue Katara sees visions of her mother Aang sees visions of an unknown girl, who is later revealed to be Toph. While flying over a swamp, Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Appa get separated by a tornado. Aang manages to rescue Bumi, but Bumi allows himself to be recaptured, saying that he must wait for a more proper time. Aang attempts to trade him for King Bumi, but fails when Azula calls off the trade. However, the Fire Nation Governor's son accidentally leaves with the citizens. They then meet a resistance movement, and help the whole city escape by creating a fake epidemic with the same pockmarks.
They sneak in and are caught by Fire Nation soldiers, but released when pockmarks on Sokka create the illusion of illness. Song, a young and compassionate healer, shows Zuko the effects of war from a normal citizen's perspective.Īang and the group find Omashu captured by the Fire Nation. Elsewhere, Zuko and Iroh are sheltered by kind Earth Kingdom villagers after Iroh accidentally drinks tea made of a poisonous plant. In the cave, Aang, Katara, and Appa become separated from Sokka and the bards. While on the way to Omashu, Aang and the group meet a group of carefree traveling bards, who take them through a vast tunnel known as "The Cave of Two Lovers". Aang nearly destroys the base in anger and the group decides to go to Omashu alone. After many failed attempts, the General finally succeeds in triggering the Avatar State by faking Katara's death. Meanwhile, Zuko found out that his sister, Azula has come to bring him and Uncle Iroh to the Fire Nation to be punished. But the general at the military base suggests that Aang defeat the Fire Lord immediately by triggering the Avatar State, a powerful defensive mechanism used by the Avatar. Meanwhile, Azula decides her hunt for Zuko and Iroh could use some stealth, so she ditches the royal procession and assembles a team.Aang, Katara, Sokka, Momo, and Appa travel to an Earth Kingdom military base to receive an escort to the city of Omashu, where King Bumi can teach Aang Earthbending. The first person she searches out is her childhood friend Ty Lee, a bubbly nobleman’s daughter who left behind the court lifestyle in favor of literally joining the circus. Ty Lee informs Azula that, for all she wants to help her-and you can tell she does, because actual lady villain friendship circle-she’s actually pretty fine where she is (“My aura’s never been pinker!”). Azula tells Ty Lee she respect her decision, but she wants to watch her show before she goes on her way. Resistance leader Beardy tells Aang that King Bumi totally punked out when the Fire Nation attacked, just surrendering without even trying to fight back. Aang, though shocked and disappointed, realizes that maaaaaybe Bumi had a point with the whole “violence is not the answer” thing. Strategic retreat, in this case, could be better. If all the Earth Kingdom citizens in Omashu pretend to have Pentapox, they’ll be able to leave the city, regroup, and figure out what to do next. Sokka, Katara, and the resistance marshall the civvies, while Aang chooses to stay behind and look for Bumi.īack to Azula, who cooly intimidates the circus ringmaster into setting Ty Lee’s safety net on fire and releasing wild animals while she’s balancing on a highwire. Maaaaan, that is some dick behavior toward your friend! After the performance, Ty solemnly informs Azula that “the universe has given me strong hints that it’s time for a career change,” so she’ll be happy to join her in her hunt for Iroh and Zuko. (Rhetorical) question: Does Ty Lee know Azula, not “the universe,” was the one responsible for her last show being really dangerous? She has to, right? “The universe” doesn’t tell a circus attendant to light a net on fire, and Azula wasn’t exactly subtle.
